Roughly one in five people you're trying to reach either can't hear your video's audio or won't. Some are deaf or hard of hearing. Many more are watching on a train, in an open-plan office, or in bed next to a sleeping partner, with the sound off by choice. Captions serve all of them at once. Common accessibility captioning mistakes

Even well-meaning captioning goes wrong in predictable ways. Watch for these.

Publishing raw auto-captions unchecked

The most common mistake by far. Auto-captions get names wrong, drop punctuation, and skip all non-speech audio. Publishing them unreviewed and calling the video accessible does a disservice to the exact people captions are meant to serve. Always do the review pass.

Captions that move too fast to read

If your speaker talks quickly, verbatim captions can flash by faster than anyone can read. It's acceptable — sometimes necessary — to lightly condense while preserving meaning, so the text stays on screen long enough to actually be read.

Forgetting non-speech information
